MARYLAND SCHOOLS ARE READY
Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC)

BRAC Subcabinet

In January 2007, Governor Martin O'Malley convened the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Subcabinet, with Lt. Governor Anthony Brown as chair, to coordinate planning for the 25,000 new households and 60,000 new employment opportunities that will accompany the transformation and realignment of federal military bases in Maryland. Dr. Nancy S. Grasmick, as the Maryland State Superintendent of Schools, is proud to serve as an integral part of Maryland's BRAC Subcabinet. Dr. Grasmick and her staff are focused on educational excellence, workforce readiness, and child care delivery. Dr. Grasmick is pleased to provide this MARYLAND SCHOOLS ARE READY webpage with information and local school system links that will help BRAC families make informed educational decisions about Maryland schools.

Maryland State Department of Education BRAC Mission Statement

The mission of the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) is to provide leadership, support, and accountability for effective systems of public education, library services and rehabilitation services.

MSDE, under the leadership of the State Superintendent of Schools and guidance from the Maryland State Board of Education, develops and implements standards and policy for education programs from pre-kindergarten through high school. MSDE’s five public education priorities are: improving student achievement; building educator’s capacity to improve achievement; building an aligned, understandable system of instruction, curriculum, and assessment; fostering positive school environments; and involving families in education.

The Interagency Committee on School Construction (IAC) promulgates guidelines and reviews and approves school construction projects in support of the IAC mission to ensure equity of school facilities across the State. The State Superintendent of Schools serves as chairperson of this committee.

The Maryland State Department of Education is proud to embrace the opportunities and challenges that BRAC provides and will approach all aspects with a collaborative effort at every level of our agency to meet the educational needs of all students.
